Beware of Heat Pump Ice This Winter

As winter approaches, temperatures are dropping. As a result, homeowners everywhere are already thinking about their heat pumps.

And while the heat pumps can keep those frigid temperatures at bay, they won’t operate very well if covered in snow and ice buildup. If you’re concerned about ending up with heat pump ice in Fort Collins, CO, this winter, here are some measures you can take.

Sheltering Your Unit

Having something to cover your unit with can protect it from snow and ice. Anything from a cover to a custom canopy or shelter would work great.

This method also offers another benefit by improving the efficiency of your system in summer by providing shade as well. However, whatever cover you use should not go directly on top of your unit; there should be a clearance of two feet around it, including the top.

Keep the Area Clear

Heat pump ice in Fort Collins, CO, is less likely to be a problem if there’s nothing around your unit that could be a landing space for ice or snow. A debris-free zone is important for many reasons, and preventing damage to your heat pump is only one of them.

And don’t forget to look up: tree branches can get flimsy from the weight of snow, causing them to crack and fall. If one of those branches lives above your heat pump, you could be looking at some unexpected repairs.

Treat Any Ice Buildup With Care

You can’t always avoid ice on your heat pump, but you can at least learn how to remove it safely. Don’t use sharp objects to chip away the ice. This might seem like an obvious way to remove it, but the sharp edges can damage the exterior. Instead, you can melt ice with warm water if outside temperatures aren’t below freezing.
