Common signs that indicate you need furnace repair

Uh oh! Is your furnace in trouble?

Colorado is known for its extreme winters, especially Fort Collins with its many sub-freezing winter evenings and average annual snowfall of 48 inches. For that reason, it’s important to have a reliable source for furnace repair in Fort Collins CO.

However, it's not always apparent when your furnace needs fixing. Some signs are obvious, like substantial indoor temperature drops. But other symptoms of a failing furnace may not be so crystal clear.

Signs that your furnace is in trouble:

If you notice any of the following signs or conditions, they may be a warning that it’s time for you to seek furnace repair in Fort Collins CO.

Strange smells.
Odors that smell like rotten eggs, mold, dust, sewage, or burning plastic may indicate trouble with your furnace’s heat exchanger, air conditioning coils, or electrical components. When bad smells appear, your home’s air quality could be in trouble – it’s time to call for repairs.

An all-yellow pilot light flame.
In older furnaces that use a pilot light, the flame should be blue with a light-yellow edge or tip. If it’s all yellow, your furnace may have a carbon monoxide leak that needs immediate service.

Constant noise.
Most furnaces, especially newer ones, shouldn’t make much noise at all when operating. When screeching or scraping noises come from your furnace, there may be a problem with the motor or blower. Occasional bangs and pops are normal, but if your furnace is making them all the time, it might have issues with its combustion.

Higher utility bills.
If you haven’t increased your furnace usage but notice your heating bill is more expensive than in the past, it may be a sign that your furnace needs to be repaired or upgraded.

Start-up failure.
Modern furnaces use gas ignitors rather than pilot lights. But if your ignition isn’t working, it could be due to an electrical or limit switch problem only a professional can solve.

An old furnace.
The average lifespan of a home furnace is 15 years. Some can stretch their usefulness to 20 or even 30 years, depending on the brand, installation, and usage. But once a furnace reaches 15 years old, it may make more economic sense to have it replaced than repaired.
